What is a Spanish NIE number?

But let’s go by parts, what’s the NIE? Well, the Spanish NIE number, which means Foreigner Identification Number and is the number given to foreigners and serves several purposes. Mainly to prove that you live in Spain and to be capable to make any transaction. The Foreigner’s Identity Number is composed of a letter, seven digits and a verification code (another letter) at the end: M – 5231368 – P. It’s a personal and non-transferable number that, as it does not contain an identifying image, so it doesn’t serve as an identity card. This tax number is issued by the General State Administration for foreigners who wish to stay in Spain for more than 3 months.

Why is it important?
